Ticket Punch

A reminder of the days when the iconic W class trams each came with a conductor wearing their leather bag of tickets and their sometimes larger than life personalities. Before the days of “remember to touch on” your friendly connie would neatly clip your ticket with their trusty punch.

More than mere gatekeepers, Melbourne’s tram conductors were unofficial ambassadors and a part of our history that’s sadly lost to us today.

The Cable Tram Engine House designed by Alexander Davidson for Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company in 1886 still stands nearby in Gertrude Street on route 86.
